CATA Rural Service

CATA Rural Service (CRS) is a demand-response service providing transportation within Ingham County’s outlying rural areas. Customers can travel anywhere within the service area and also connect with other CATA services.

Service Changes Effective Aug. 24, 2026

Beginning at the start of service Aug. 24, 2026, the following service changes will be implemented:

  • The City of Mason will be added to the service area, incorporating the former Mason Redi-Ride service area into the CRS zone.
  • Monday-Friday service hours will be extended, beginning earlier at 6:30 a.m. and ending later at 6:30 p.m.
  • Saturday service will be added from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Same-day trips will be available to schedule up to four hours in advance. Pickups may be available sooner than four hours depending on service availability.
  • The distance-based fare for trips over 10 miles has been removed.
  • All trips on CATA Rural Service will have a fare of $2.25 regular and $1 discounted.

Service Overview

CATA Rural Service (CRS) is a demand-response service providing transportation within Ingham County’s outlying rural areas. Customers can travel anywhere within the service area and also connect with other CATA services.

Riders transferring to fixed-routes or other CATA services operating outside of the CATA Rural Service area (shaded area shown on the map), typically connect at one of two locations, depending on where their trip begins. Some exceptions apply.

  • Trips beginning in rural areas of northern Ingham County, generally north of Holt Road (dotted area shown on map), can transfer to these CATA services at Meridian Mall in Okemos for travel to East Lansing, Lansing, Meridian Township, Williamston and Webberville:
    • Route 1 – Downtown Lansing – Meridian Mall,
      Route 22 – MSU – Haslett – Okemos,
      Route 23 – MSU – Okemos – Haslett,
      Meridian Redi-Ride, Spec-Tran,
      48 – Williamston/Webberville Connector
  • Trips beginning in rural areas of southern Ingham County, generally south of Holt Road (dashed area shown on map), can transfer to 46 – Mason Connector at Meijer in Mason and for travel to South Lansing. Connect with these CATA services at the S. Pennsylvania Meijer for travel to Lansing and Delhi Township:
    • Route 5 – South Cedar – Edgewood,
      Route 7 – Aurelius – Miller,
      Route 8 – Pennsylvania – Holt,
      Route 9 – South MLK – Miller,
      Delhi Redi-Ride
  • Riders transferring between CRS in southern Ingham County (dashed area shown on map) and Spec-Tran connect at the Meijer on S. Pennsylvania Avenue in Lansing.

One-way regular fare is $2.25. Discounted fare is $1.00 for individuals showing eligible ID cards.

  • Saturday: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

To Schedule a Ride

Scheduling Information:

  • Same-day trips can be scheduled up to four hours in advance. Earlier trip reservations may be accommodated based on service availability.

  • Advanced reservations will be limited to no more than seven days prior to any desired trip date(s).

To Cancel a Ride

  • Rides must be canceled at least four hours before the scheduled trip.
  • Trips scheduled before 10:30 a.m. must be canceled by 5 p.m. the day before.
  • Trips scheduled before 10:30 a.m. on the day after a holiday must be canceled by 5 p.m. on the day before the holiday.
  • Failure to follow the cancellation procedure will result in penalties in accordance with CATA's no-show rules.

Cameras on Board Paratransit Vehicles

In April 2018 CATA contracted with Transdev, an international public transit services company, to assist with transporting CATA’s paratransit customers. With this new partnership comes a new initiative—cameras on board. For the safety of our drivers, passengers and community, all small buses and minivans operated by Transdev will be equipped with technology that records audio and video of activities occurring inside and/or outside the vehicle. This technology is powered by Lytx in partnership with Transdev and CATA.
