Cash works on every CATA bus. While we offer contactless payment options, you can always pay with cash when you board. Bring your fare and you're ready to ride.
Pay with Cash on CATA Buses
Put your cash in the farebox near the driver. It’s as simple as that. Have your money ready before you step on the bus so that you can board faster
If you qualify for a discounted fare, have your ID ready to show the driver when you board.
What Bills and Coins the Farebox Accepts
The farebox accepts quarters, $1 bills, $5 bills and $10 bills.
Make sure your bills are not ripped or damaged. The farebox may not accept worn bills.
* Pennies, nickels, dimes, half-dollars and dollar coins are not accepted.
Drivers Cannot Make Change
Bus drivers cannot give you change. Try to bring exact fare when you ride.
If you put more money in the farebox than your fare costs, the farebox will give you a CATACash Card. This card holds the extra money you paid. You can use it to pay for future rides on CATA fixed-route buses.
● The farebox prints a card with your balance on it
● Keep the card to use on your next trip
● Swipe or insert the card in the farebox on future rides
● The fare comes off your card balance
Paying Discounted Fares with Cash
If you qualify for a discounted fare, you can pay the lower price with cash. Just show your qualifying ID to the driver when you board.
IDs that qualify for discounted cash fares:
● CATA Student ID
● College Student ID
● CATAClub Card
● Medicare Card
● ADA Card
Discounted fares do not apply to Spec-Tran or Shopping Bus services.

Bring Exact Change When Possible
Having exact change speeds up boarding and means you don't have to worry about getting a CATACash Card.

Different services and routes have different fares. Check the fare for your trip before you get on the bus.
Keep Your CATACash Card Safe
If the farebox gives you a CATACash Card, keep it in a safe place. CATA cannot replace lost or stolen cards.
