CATA to host public meetings on proposed service changes

The Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) will host a series of public meetings to gather community feedback on proposed service changes scheduled to take effect Monday, Aug. 24, 2026.  

Residents are encouraged to review the proposed service changes and provide feedback by attending a public meeting or submitting comments by email, mail or phone. 

Proposed Service Changes

Route 1 – Downtown Lansing – Meridian Mall:  

  • Weekday service frequency in the afternoon and early evening would change from every  
  • 12 minutes to every 15 minutes.  
  • Late-night service Thursday through Saturday would be eliminated.
    • Final departures Monday through Saturday from the CTC will be at 10:20 p.m. and from Meridian Mall at 11 p.m. 

Those traveling during late-night hours will be supported through an alternative transportation pilot program funded by Uber Transit. Details to be announced at a later date. 

Route 9 – South Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd – Miller:  

  • The outbound loop through downtown Lansing along Grand Avenue, Shiawassee Street and Capitol Avenue would be eliminated, with buses traveling directly onto Kalamazoo Street from the CTC.
  • Buses would no longer travel to Lansing Community College.
  • Lansing Community College would still be served by other downtown routes and services.
  • Monday–Friday: Trips to South Pennsylvania Meijer would depart 3–5 minutes earlier and arrive about 5 minutes earlier. Trips to the CTC would depart 8–10 minutes earlier and arrive about 5 minutes earlier.
  • Saturday & Sunday: Trips to South Pennsylvania Meijer would depart 2–3 minutes earlier and arrive about 5 minutes earlier. Trips from South Penn Meijer to the CTC would depart 10–12 minutes earlier and arrive about 5 minutes earlier.
  • Monday-Sunday: Service frequency would continue to operate every 30 minutes.

     

Route 18 – Capital City Crosstown:  

  • Buses would serve Spartan Village on all inbound and outbound trips.
  • Routing and service times would be adjusted. Details to be announced at a later date.  
  • Route 20 will no longer travel into Spartan Village.

     

Route 20 – South Harrison – Jolly-Dunckel:  

  • Weekday service frequency would change from every 30 minutes to every 40 minutes throughout the day and into the evening. 
  • Saturday and Sunday buses would operate every 40 minutes instead of every 45 minutes.
  • Buses would remain on Harrison Road and would no longer serve Spartan Village on all inbound and outbound trips.
  • Spartan Village would now be served by Route 18

     

Route 46 – Mason, Limited:  

  • Service would be discontinued (see proposed Mason Connector change below).

     

Mason Connector:  

  • Monday-Friday service hours would be expanded to incorporate service hours no longer served by Route 46.
  • Saturday service would be eliminated (see proposed CATA Rural Service (CRS) change below).

     

Route 48 – Williamston – Webberville, Limited:  

  • Service would be discontinued (see proposed Williamston/Webberville Connector change below)

 

Williamston/Webberville Connector:  

  • Monday-Friday service hours would be expanded to incorporate service hours no longer served by Route 48.
  • Saturday service would be eliminated (see proposed CATA Rural Service (CRS) change below).

     

 Mason Redi-Ride:

  • Service would be discontinued (see proposed CATA Rural Service (CRS) change below).

     

CATA Rural Service (CRS):  

  • The City of Mason would be added to the service area, incorporating the Mason Redi-Ride service area into the CRS zone.
  • Saturday service from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. would be added to incorporate service hours no longer served by the Mason Connector, Mason Redi-Ride and Williamston/Webberville Connector.
  • Same-day trips would be available to schedule up to four hours in advance. Earlier trip reservations may be accommodated based on service availability.
  • The distance-based fare for trips over 10 miles would be eliminated.  
  • All trips within the CATA Rural Service area would have a fare of $2.25 regular and $1.00 discounted. 

     

CATA Rydz  

  • CATA Rydz Connect service to and from the Capital Region International Airport (LAN) would expand to include the Delta Township and Lansing On-Demand zones. Service hours are 4 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday–Sunday. All rides to and from the airport must be prebooked at least two hours prior to the desired pickup/arrival time and may be booked up to three days in advance. Previously, this service only included trips between the Airport Zone and the MSU Campus Zone (nine locations).

     

Public Meeting Schedule

CATA representatives will be available at each meeting to answer questions and discuss the proposed changes in an open-house format. There will be no formal presentation, allowing attendees to speak individually with staff. The same information will be available at every meeting.

Meeting locations are accessible by CATA services. Spec-Tran rides must be reserved by 5 p.m. the evening before the meeting. Individuals requiring accommodations should contact CATA Customer Experience at 517-394-1000. CATA will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for requests received by 5 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2026.

How to Provide Feedback

Community members unable to attend a public meeting may review the proposed service changes and submit comments by emailing marketing@cata.org, calling 517-394-1000 or mailing comments to CATA's Marketing Department at 4615 Tranter St., Lansing, MI 48910. Comments must be received by 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
