2024/2025 MSU Campus Service

CATA’s Spartan Service operates seven days a week during fall and spring semesters. Nine dedicated free-fare campus routes serve university apartments, residence halls, commuter lots and main campus facilities throughout the day and evening, with over 100 bus stops for convenient access. 

Lot Link and Night Owl, demand-response services, operate late at night and early in the morning when campus routes are not in service. A discounted student fare of 60 cents, a regular fare of $1.25 or a bus pass is required to ride these services. To request a ride, call 517-432-8888. A bus will be at your location within 20 minutes of your call. Rides are restricted to campus. Lot Link transports passengers between Lots 80, 83, Commuter Lot 89 or 91 and any MSU campus location. Lot Link also serves Spartan Village Monday-Friday.

(Campus routes and services do not operate the week of Spring Break except for Route 32)

Additionally, CATA provides year-round service from off-campus apartments in the East Lansing, Okemos, Haslett and Jolly/Dunckel Road areas to MSU. For questions, please call 517-394-1100.

Summer Service Changes

Summer service changes and reductions will be in effect April 29 through Aug. 18 while MSU is on summer break. 

Spartan Service routes operating on MSU’s campus will change as follows:

Route 32 Commuter Lot/Snyder Hall/Clinical Center: The route will operate weekdays from 7 a.m. until 7:25 p.m. at a reduced frequency during the summer. Buses will depart the MSU-CATA Transportation Center at Ramp 1 every 30 minutes, rather than every 15 minutes. The campus detour remains in effect due to the Farm Lane closure. Buses will not travel north of Shaw Lane or Ramp 1 until the road project is completed.

Weekday MSU Campus Service: The following routes will end service for summer as follows:

Route 33 – at 10:30 p.m. Friday, April 26.

Route 38 – at 10:45 p.m. Friday, April 26.

Routes 30, 31 and 39 – by 2:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27.

Weekend MSU Campus Service: Routes 34, 35, 36 and Lot Link will operate through 2 a.m. Monday, April 29

Night Owl: Curb-to-curb campus service will operate as usual until 9 a.m. Sunday, April 28.

Service modifications will also be implemented across the following routes during the summer. Refer to the Transit app or access CATA’s trip planner or individual schedule pages.

Route 1 – Downtown Lansing/Meridian Mall: Departures from bus stops along downtown Lansing’s Capitol Loop will continue to occur up to eight minutes later than usual Monday through Friday evening.

Route 20 – South Harrison/Jolly/Dunckel: Route 20 will travel into Spartan Village and the MSU/CTC at Ramp 1 while continuing to serve the adjacent Shaw and Farm boarding area. The campus detour remains in effect due to the Farm Lane closure. Buses will use Bogue Street to access Grand River Avenue when heading off campus until the road project is completed.

Route 22 – MSU/Haslett/Okemos: Buses will travel into the MSU/CTC at Ramp 1 while continuing to serve the Shaw and Farm boarding area. The campus detour remains in effect due to the Farm Lane closure. Buses will use Bogue Street to access Grand River Avenue when heading off campus until the road project is completed.

Route 23 – MSU/Okemos/Haslett: Monday through Friday, between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., buses will run less often – every 35-45 minutes rather than every 25 minutes. Buses will travel into the MSU/CTC at Ramp 1 while continuing to serve the Shaw and Farm boarding area.

Route 24 – East Lansing/E. Lake Lansing Road: Weekday service will operate every 30 minutes rather than every 35 minutes. Saturday and Sunday service will continue every 60 minutes. The route will travel to Ramp 5 on Red Cedar as usual. The campus detour remains in effect due to the Farm Lane closure. Buses heading off campus will use Bogue Street to Grand River Avenue to Farm Lane and around Psychology/Physics and back to Grand River Avenue until the road project is completed. Buses heading to campus will use Auditorium and Bogue Street and resume travel on Farm Lane south of the closure.

Route 25 – North Harrison: Weekday buses will operate every 60 minutes during the day and early evening rather than every 30 minutes. Weekend service will operate as usual. The route will continue to travel to Ramp 5 on Red Cedar. The campus detour remains in effect due to the road closure. Buses will use Shaw Lane between Harrison Road and Chestnut Road rather than Kalamazoo until the road project is completed.

Route 26 – Abbot/Chandler: Weekday buses will operate every 45 minutes rather than every 10-20 minutes and conclude at 7:15 p.m. at the MSU-CTC/Ramp 1. Saturday service will end at 7:15 p.m. at the MSU-CTC/Ramp 1. Sunday service will operate as usual. The campus detour remains in effect due to the Farm Lane closure. Buses heading off campus will use Bogue Street to access Grand River Avenue; buses heading to campus will use Auditorium and Bogue Street to return to Ramp 1 until the road project is completed.

Lot Link will begin providing campus service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, and operate until 2 a.m. Monday morning when Night Owl service resumes.

Spartan Service, provided on Routes 20, 23, 24, 25, 26 and Routes 30, 31, 32, 33, 38 and 39, resumes at the start of service Monday, Aug. 19.

Farm Lane Detour 2024 Spring/Summer

Campus Route Detours

Routes 31, 32, 33, 34 and 39 will be on detour throughout the 2024 spring semester due to bridge work north of West Shaw Lane on Farm Lane.

Route 31 and 34 buses will use Bogue Street to Grand River, to Farm Lane to Auditorium Road and onto Physics while on detour.

Route 32 will not travel north of Shaw Lane during the construction project. Board at Ramp 1.

Route 33 buses headed to the Union will use Bogue Street (temporary bus stop across for Snyder Phillips Hall) to Grand River to Farm Lane to West Circle while on detour.

Route 39 will use Shaw Lane rather than Kalamazoo between Harrison Road and Chestnut. The four bus stops on Kalamazoo will not be served by this route.

The detour will extend into the summer impacting Route 32 summer service. Refer to the individual routes for details prior to the start of the spring semester.

Off-campus Detours

Routes 18, 20, 22, 24, 25 and 26 will also be on detour throughout the spring semester and continue into the summer.

Route 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 buses traveling away from campus will travel Bogue Street to Grand River Avenue.

Route 24 buses headed off campus will circle back onto Farm Lane to temporary stop at Circle Drive and continue to Psychology and back to Farm and Grand River. Route 24 buses headed onto campus will continue to travel on Farm Lane to Auditorium then use Bogue Street and Shaw Lane to return to Farm Lane and Wilson.

Route 25 buses will use Shaw Lane rather than Kalamazoo between Harrison Road and Chestnut. The four bus stops on Kalamazoo will not be served by this route.

Starting Jan. 18, all Route 26 buses headed to campus will resume travel on Farm Lane serving the two stops and continue south to Auditorium then head to Bogue to continue inbound to Ramp 1.

Weekday Service

Monday-Friday Service

CATA will operate six fixed routes on campus weekdays 7 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. Ending times vary by route and are noted below. Buses will run as often as every 10 minutes during the day and early evening.

  • Route 30 South & East Neighborhoods (service concludes at 2:30 a.m.)
  • Route 31 Brody & East Neighborhoods (service concludes at 2:30 a.m.)
  • Route 32 Commuter Lot - Snyder Hall - Clinical Center (service concludes at 7:15 p.m.)
  • Route 33 North & South Neighborhoods (service concludes at 10:30 p.m.)
  • Route 38 Spartan Village (service concludes at 10:45 p.m.)
  • Route 39 University Village (service concludes at 2 a.m.)
  • MSU Weekday Schedule (Spanish)

Disability Service

CATA operates on-campus Spec-Tran service 7 days a week for passengers with disabilities who cannot use fixed-route. Spec-Tran MSU passengers are eligible for free passes through MSU's Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities.

MSU-CATA Transportation Center (Shaw Parking Ramp #1)

The main boarding center and transfer point for CATA routes serving MSU is open 24-7. The facility is located across from Shaw Hall and includes bus schedules and maps, indoor seating, community policing office, public restrooms, vending machines and an ATM, access to MSU’s Ramp 1 parking, and CATA’s Customer Experience Service direct phone lines.
