CATA Rydz has been bridging mobility gaps for transit-dependent riders since November when the newly-developed app-based service rolled out its initial phase. With the official launch on Jan. 27, two new enhancements will be introduced — the integration with Transit app and a monthlong free-ride promotion.
CATA Rydz offers commuters outside CATA’s service area a solution to accessing the region’s fixed-route system, and riders within established zones a convenient option to connect to existing transit services. Generally, rides booked within a zone transport passengers to the nearest bus route or destination.
“As an on-demand microtransit service, CATA Rydz elevates regional mobility and strengthens seamless public transportation,” said CATA CEO Bradley T. Funkhouser. “Integrating transit systems throughout the region is at the forefront of CATA’s goals and microtransit service is a key element of this integration.”
Last year, CATA contracted with Via Transportation Inc. to develop and operate the area’s microtransit service. The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Service Initiative program awarded CATA $1.664 million to fund the service.
CATA Rydz is currently operating in three zones: areas of Delta Township for enhanced job access to manufacturing and distribution operations, downtown Lansing to address transit accessibility obstacles, particularly among its aging population, and MSU-to-LAN airport service to coincide with campus travelers’ flights to and from the Capital Region International Airport.
To stimulate growth, commuters traveling in these zones will receive fare-free service Jan. 27 through Feb. 27. The regular one-way fare is $1.25. Riders will be required to download the CATA Rydz app in order to book the free trips. Details about the app can be found at the CATA Rydz webpage .
For the 21,800 active Transit users, CATA Rydz will be easily accessible as the service becomes integrated with the real-time bus tracking application. CATA recently partnered with Transit to integrate the microtransit platform. Fixed-route riders who have relied on Transit for over seven years to plan and track their daily commutes can now seamlessly connect to travel beyond the fixed-route boundaries all within one app.
In October, CATA was awarded additional funding from MDOT for microtransit service to extend to third-shift workers in the Greater Lansing region. CATA Rydz currently operates until 8 p.m. in Delta Township and downtown Lansing. Extending service to accommodate late-night shifts will be phased in at a later date.
