Lansing, Mich. — Local meteorologists are forecasting high heat index
temperatures for Tuesday and Wednesday this week, prompting the Lansing
Emergency Management Office to announce plans to open cooling centers in
the morning. The Capital Area Transportation Authority committed to
provide free transportation services to cooling centers for eligible
residents.
"CATA can be counted on to contribute to efforts that ensure public
health and safety," said Sandy Draggoo, CATA's CEO/Executive Director.
"As we've done in past years, we are prepared to support the city's
heat-relief program by offering free transportation to designated
cooling centers for eligible residents who — due to financial or medical
hardship — are unable to access our regularly scheduled bus routes."
To locate a nearby cooling center and determine eligibility for a free
ride, residents should dial 2-1-1. Ingham County residents eligible for
free transportation to a cooling center will be given instructions to
schedule a ride. CATA will continue to assist the 2-1-1 Center with free
rides to eligible residents throughout the heat-alert period, which is
expected to last through Wednesday.
