The Capital Area Transportation Authority is now licensed through National Safe Place Network to operate Safe Place®, a national outreach and prevention program for vulnerable youth. With this designation, CATA’s vehicles and facilities will serve as safe places for individuals under the age of 18 who are experiencing crisis.
“As a Safe Place partner, CATA is committed to providing critical support for youths experiencing abuse, neglect, violence, bullying, trafficking or stalking,” said CATA CEO Bradley T. Funkhouser. “The success of this initiative relies on our community partners. Together, we will ensure that no young person is left without access to the vital resources they need.”
In addition to supporting youths through the Safe Place program, CATA will continue to provide assistance to anyone in need of help within its service area.
CATA has partnered with the National Safe Place Network, law enforcement and local service agencies to connect youths to resources such as Gateway Youth Services Division through Child and Family Charities. Safe Place locations are now available on all CATA vehicles, at the downtown CATA Transportation Center and the Capital Area Multimodal Gateway, each marked with easily recognizable signage for quick identification. Individuals can board a CATA vehicle free of charge by letting the driver know they need assistance. Any CATA employee or security personnel can also respond to requests for assistance. CATA will coordinate with local authorities to provide immediate support.
“National Safe Place Network is thrilled to welcome Capital Area Transportation Authority as a Safe Place partner. Their commitment to youth and community safety ensures young people in crisis have access to immediate help and supportive resources,” said National Safe Place Network President and CEO Laurie Padilla. “By launching their Safe Place program during National Safe Place Week, CATA is demonstrating a strong dedication to protecting and supporting youth in the community. Together, we are expanding the safety net and strengthening the network of trusted spaces for young people in need.”
