CATA is continuing to provide free transportation and warming services as part of the City of Lansing’s Code Blue cold weather emergency plan, which is activated during periods of extreme winter weather.
Under Code Blue, CATA is helping transport individuals in need to warming centers and shelters at no cost. Several services are currently available to support residents during the cold snap.
Warming Bus on Route 1
CATA has a 24-hour “warming bus” service on Route 1, which operates between downtown Lansing and the Meridian Mall in Okemos. This overnight service is scheduled to continue through the start of service on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
Free Rides to Warming Centers and Shelters
During Code Blue activations, CATA drivers provide free transportation to and from local warming centers and shelters on any route. Riders simply need to inform the driver that they are traveling to or from a warming center or shelter.
Warming Center at the CATA Transportation Center
The CATA Transportation Center is open as a public warming center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Morning Shuttle from Letts Community Center
CATA is also operating a one-trip, single-bus morning shuttle from the Letts Community Center — which serves as an overnight warming shelter from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. — to the CATA Transportation Center.
City officials say Code Blue will remain in effect during overnight hours through at least 7 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, and that conditions are being monitored closely in case further extensions are needed.
A full list of warming shelters is available online through local emergency management and housing services.
