Student ID Card

CATA's Student IDs are free through local middle and high schools. The IDs allow students to ride at a discounted rate. All students (youth & adult) in grades 6 and above are eligible. A valid college identification card is accepted in place of a CATA Student ID. The only restrictions are that students must not violate CATA's Rules. The rules can be found posted on CATA buses and on the back of the Student ID brochure which can be obtained through school offices.

What's new about CATA's Student ID Card?

CATA Student IDs have a magnetic strip on the back. When you swipe your ID on the right side of CATA's farebox, the strip identifies you as a student and permits you to ride all of CATA's fixed-routes for the discounted student fare of 50¢. After you swipe your ID, deposit your cash fare in the farebox.

The student fare only applies if you swipe your ID, so be sure to keep it with you. Otherwise, you will have to pay the full fare. CATA transfers are free.

Where can I use my ID Card?

Your CATA Student ID card is good on all CATA fixed-route buses and for discounts on CATA Rural Service fares for a full year. For more information on CATA Rural Services, call 1-800-322-1390.

Do I need exact change?

Not anymore! With CATA's magnetic fareboxes, if you pay too much, you will receive a CATACash Card. Use it to pay for future rides on CATA fixed-route buses.

How else can my CATA ID Card save me money?

Use your ID Card to purchase a Student 31-Day Pass if you ride the bus to and from school each day. If you pay 50¢ each trip, you are spending $20 a month just to get to and from school. Your ID makes you eligible to purchase the 31-Day Pass for just $14 – a savings of $6 each month. Or consider the Student Semester Pass for just $45. Passes may be purchased online.

The Student 10-Ride Card (good for 10 one-way trips) sells for $5 and offers the convenience of not having to carry cash.

What happens if I lose or damage my ID?

If your ID is lost or damaged, a replacement can be purchased for $5. Only one replacement ID will be available per school year. Replacement cards are available at: CATA Administrative Office, 4615 Tranter Street, Lansing.
