Fareboxes accept $1, $5, and $10 bills, as well as all U.S. coins.
While drivers cannot make change, if you use cash and pay more than your fare, the farebox can issue a CATACash Card to use towards payment on future fixed-route trips. Fareboxes issue a CATACash Card for the difference between what you owe and what you deposit in the farebox when you pay too much. CATACash Cards are only issued and accepted on CATA fixed-route buses. The cards cannot be redeemed for cash.
Tokens
As an alternative to cash, CATA sells tokens that are good for a one-way ride on any CATA fixed-route in Zone 1 or Spec-Tran vehicle in both Zone 1 and 2. Fixed-route tokens are available in convenient packages of 10 for $10.00. Spec-Tran tokens sell for $2.50 each. Fixed-route tokens are not accepted in Zone 2.
Transfers
If you are paying cash for your trip, and need to use multiple routes or services to reach your destination, you can use a free transfer card. Transfer cards enable a customer to transfer to a bus on another route or service without paying an additional fare. Transferring to an equal or lower-fare service is free.
When transferring to a higher-fare service, the difference in fare must be paid
when you board.
Ask your bus operator for a transfer when boarding your first bus.
Each transfer is valid for two hours. It may be used up to two times within the two-hour period.
Transfers allow passengers to continue in one direction. May not be used to make a return trip.
Transfers will not be accepted in Zone 2. However, when requested, transfers will be issued upon boarding at a Zone 2 bus stop for use in Zone 1.
